THANKSGIVING FORGETFUL OR RECALLFUL MEMORY

Deuteronomy 8:1-20

In the context of Deut 8:1-20, Moses dealt with the issue of forgetfulness. Reminding them of where the lord brought them out from and also warning them of the danger in forgetfulness.

Moses was showcasing the catalog of God’s faithfulness, the catalog of God’s wonders and signs. Moses showcased before the people how God brought them, led them, provided for them and multiplied them. God brought them out in the wilderness of life.

In that chapter of the scripture, what we saw clearly was that Moses stood before the children of Israel and recounted or  brought to their memory the workings and the doings of God and clearly warned them not to forget.

Psalms 103:1-7

Everything the lord has done counts, so we count all of them. We will not forget all of his benefits. Some breakthroughs that came our way are for renewal and rejuvenation.

He was actually lame ting. In his own mindset he was thinking that  Just because there is a remembrance that is taking place.

In Deuteronomy, Moses told them about the wonders of God and told them not to forget the wonders of God. He told them not to forget the benefit of God.

Lamentations 3:1-2, 20-24  I am the man that hath seen affliction by the rod of his wrath.

He hath led me, and brought me into darkness, but not into light.

My soul hath them still in remembrance, and is humbled in me.

This I recall in my mind, therefore I hope.

It is of the LORD’S mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not.

They are new every morning: great is thy faithfulness.

The LORD is my portion, saith my soul; therefore will I hope in him.

Despite the aforementioned, he remembered the mercy of the Lord in his writings. That was a switch in his mindset. He said the mercy of the Lord is new every morning. Great is His faithfulness. When he begins to remember the mercy of God his soul begins to give thanks to God.

So we can see it is a function of where we pitch our tent – as a giver of thanks or as one who laments.

We can see in verse 22, the writer says, “this I recall.”

Lamentations 3:20-24  My soul hath them still in remembrance, and is humbled in me.

This I recall in my mind, therefore I hope.

It is of the LORD’S mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not.

They are new every morning: great is thy faithfulness.

The LORD is my portion, saith my soul; therefore will I hope in him. What makes us to be a giver of thanks or one who laments is our choice of remembering the faithfulness of God or recalling His faithfulness.

That settles us in the midst of a particular camp.

The camp of people that gives thanks. They know how to recall God’s faithfulness. They know how to recall God’s faithfulness in one’s mind. This means man can be forgetful.

This is why Thanksgiving is a choice and forgetfulness too is a choice. When we are forgetful we choose to be sorrowful.

Anybody can be forgetful. It is not only in adversity but also in prosperity. A man can be so prosperous and be forgetful of the Lord’s mercy and grace.

A man can eat and become full and can forget of the Lord’s plenty and that his power and strength has made him to have it.

Psalms 44:3  For they got not the land in possession by their own sword, neither did their own arm save them: but thy right hand, and thine arm, and the light of thy countenance, because thou hadst a favour unto them.

Moses reminded them of the children of Israel of God’s wonders to them as they left Egypt.

We will not undermine the place of strength, strategy and skills, but let’s not also forget that we’ve come this far not just by our strength, strategy or skills, because many people have these but they are still stranded in life. You must never come to a point in your life where you accredit the workings of God to skills, strategy and strength. Skill and strategy that is not favored will be stranded.

You must remember where God brought you from and where he is taking you to. The only man/woman that will end this year joyful is the one whose memory is blessed, who remembers the goodness of God.

At the point when we thought all hope was gone , he came, he showed up for us.
Strategy does not count for us. It is in his favour. Many with lined up strategies do not have what to show as a result. But for us, our safety is of the Lord.

We will set up and launch out powerfully for the coming days but we know that this strategy is of the Lord and he alone can empower it. So, we will bring it before him and ask that h refires  and enable it. We know that if he does not favour the skills we come back to nothing.
We are not forgetful children.

The ability to remember and return to say thank you shows gratefulness. Jesus healed ten lepers 9 got healed but only one returned to show gratitude.
I am the son returning to say thank you for God’s faithfulness. How he showed up for us in the middle of the turbulence we experienced.
The reason many think the lord has not done much is because they don’t count and can’t trace what has been done for them.

There are so many things you trivialised but many desire to afford those. You do not truly know what God kept you from. He is your sustenance.
Do not let the goodness of today make you forget those days you couldn’t afford a meal. Recall and be grateful.
